Design
The detailed and unique design is what separates the Philharmonic from other bullion coins. It is named after the world famous Vienna Philharmonic orchestra (Wiener Philharmoniker). The motif side of the coin displays the orchestra instruments which include 2 viols, 2 violins, bassoon, cello, horn and harp. The inscription along the top outer edge reads “Wiener Philharmoniker”.
The value side depicts the great organ of the Vienna Golden Hall. The balcony, where the organ sits, extends to the outer edge of the coin. Engraved around the top outer edge are the letters “Republik Osterreich”, which translates Republic of Austria. Below the balcony the weight “1 Unze Gold 999.9” year of issue “2018” and nominal value “50 Euro” are embossed.
History
The Vienna Philharmonic was first introduced in 1989 in 1 oz and ¼ oz sizes. The 1/10 oz was introduced in 1991 and the ½ oz was launched in 1994. Each year the coin features the same design.
The Philharmonic was a huge success from its inception. In 1990 it was the best selling bullion coin in Europe and second in the world. The Philharmonic continues to be one of the most popular gold bullion coins in the world.
