Share :

The first fractional sized gold coin in the 2016 Vienna Philharmonic series is the 1/2 oz. The 1/2 oz is a popular size because it provides investors with a good alternative to the 1 oz size at lower price point. These coins come in brilliant “uncirculated” condition, which is a flawless looking gold coin. Each coin is 99.99% pure gold and are produced by the Austrian Mint. Vienna Philharmonic gold coins are the best selling gold coin in Europe and also a top selling coin globally.

Weight, Size & Specifications

The factional weight 2016 Vienna Philharmonic gold coin series is available in 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz. The 1/25 oz Gold Philharmonic was produced in 2014 by the Austrian Mint to celebrate the 25 year anniversary of the Vienna Philharmonic gold coin series. The specifications for the 2016 1/2 oz Vienna Gold Philharmonic are listed below.

Name Fineweight Thickness Diameter Nominal Value
Vienna Philharmonic 15.552 g 28 mm 1.6 mm 50 Euro

History

The coin received it’s name from the famous Vienna Philharmonic orchestra (Wiener Philharmoniker). The 1 ounce Gold Philharmonic was introduced in 1989 and had a face value of 2,000 Austrian Shillings (ATS). In 2002, the nominal value of the 1 ounce coin was changed to 100 Euro with adoption of the Euro currency. In 2008 the mint introduced the 1 ounce Silver version of the Philharmonic with a nominal value of 1.50 Euro. The Vienna Philharmonic Silver coin has also become a best selling bullion coin. In an effort to continue to expand the precious metals product portfolio, the Austrian Mint introduced a 1 ounce platinum coin in 2016 with face value of 100 Euro.

Vienna Philharmonic gold coins are considered legal tender in Austria.

Advantages

The 1/2 oz Vienna Philharmonic gold coin is good for investors who are looking for alternatives to the 1 oz size. The 2016 edition comes in mint condition, which means that it is “uncirculated” and is in near perfect condition.

Because these coins are in mint condition the 1/2 Gold Philharmonic should be kept in its protective packaging. Gold is a soft material and as a result, surface scratches can develop on pure gold coins if they are not handled with care.
