The Rand Refinery was the inventor of the standard 1oz investment gold coin. With the launch of the Krugerrand in 1967 it still produces the most well-known gold coin in the world today.
The obverse of the Krugerrand ¼ oz Gold Coin 2021 features a relief portrait of Paul Kruger by Otto Shultz. The words “SOUTH AFRICA” and “SUID-AFRIKA” surround the image. No face value is displayed although the coin is recognised as legal tender in South Africa.
The reverse of the coin showcases the well-known image of a pronking springbok, which is a type of South African antelope. It was designed by Coert Steynberg in 1947 and has been updated slightly from the original. The word "KRUGERRAND" is displayed together with the year of issue and “FYN GOUD ¼ OZ FINE GOLD”.
The Krugerrand ¼ oz Gold Coin 2021 is minted from a quarter of a troy ounce of fine gold and has a fine weight of 7.78 grams. It has a diameter of 22.00 mm and a purity of 917/1000 or 22 karats. The Krugerrand is also available in weights of 1oz, ½ oz and 1/10 oz in gold and 1oz in silver.
