The Perth Mint, owned by the Government of Western Australia, serves as Australia's official bullion mint. Founded in 1899, it is renowned for its superior craftsmanship and commitment to minting excellence. The Kangaroo bullion coin, initially known as the Gold Nugget, was redesigned in 1990 to showcase the iconic kangaroo, and in 2015, the silver Kangaroo bullion coin was launched.
The reverse of the 2020 Australian Kangaroo 1oz Silver Coin, designed by Stuart Devlin, features an adult kangaroo mid-leap, encircled by stylised rays of sunlight. The inscription "Kangaroo," along with the coin's weight and purity, frames the image, and the mintmark "P" is also present. For security, a micro-laser engraved letter, visible only under magnification, is included.
The obverse displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II which was designed by Jody Clark in 2015. There are wavy lines surrounding the image with the inscription‘ ᐧ ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA ᐧ ’ and ‘1 DOLLAR’. The coin is legal tender in Australia.
The Australian Kangaroo 1oz Silver Coin 2020 contains one troy ounce of fine silver with a purity of 999.9/1000 and has a metric weight of 31.10 grams. It measures 40.60 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 3.21 mm. The 2020 Kangaroo bullion coin is also available in gold in weights of 1oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz, and in platinum with a weight of 1oz.
