The Perth Mint was established in Western Australia in the late 1800s as a branch of the British Royal Mint. It was in 1970 that ownership was transferred to the Western Australian Government. Australia’s official bullion coin program was launched in 1987 and the mint is now a global leader in the gold industry. The Perth Mint continually produces high quality bullion with interesting designs and quality craftsmanship.

The Australian Chinese Myths and Legends series began in 2017 with the Double Pixiu introduced in 2020. The 1oz Double Pixiu Gold Coin 2021 was limited to 5,000 coins. A pixiu is a mythical creature that is believed to attract wealth and good fortune. In one Chinese legend, the pixiu is believed to have defecated in Heaven so the Jade Emperor sealed its anus and it was only allowed to eat gold, silver and jewels. This surely makes it a good omen for retaining wealth!

The reverse of the coin displays the two Pixius facing each other sitting on lots of  ancient Chinese coins. There is a P in between them at the top of the coin which is the mark of the Perth Mint. Pixiu translates to panther, however they are described as having the head of a dragon and body of a lion. They also have antlers, wings, hooves and sharp claws and teeth.

The obverse of the coin displays a portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark together with the face value of the coin which is 100 Australian Dollars.

The Australian Chinese Myths and Legends Double Pixiu 1oz Gold Coin 2021 contains 1 troy ounce of fine gold with a purity of 999/1000. It has a gross metric weight of 31.10 grams. The coin has a thickness of 2.50 mm and a diameter of 32.60 mm.

The fascinating story of the coin together with the stunning artwork make this an enticing piece for collectors and the myth surrounding its ability to attract wealth could also be tempting for investors.
