Buy Gold Krugerrand Coins – The Coin That Created the Bullion Market
The Gold Krugerrand is the most important gold coin in history. Introduced on 3 July 1967 by South Africa's SA Mint, it created the entire modern private gold investment market – before 1967, there was no transparent, standardised gold product for private investors. With over 60 million coins minted to date and 22 products at CelticGold spanning standard and proof editions, the Krugerrand remains the world's most widely held gold bullion coin.
History – How One Coin Changed Everything
Before the Krugerrand, private investors who wanted gold had to negotiate directly with banks, jewellers or coin dealers at opaque and inconsistent prices. South Africa's innovation was radical simplicity: one troy ounce of fine gold, priced daily at the international spot market price plus a small fixed premium. No mystery, no negotiation.
The coin is named for Paul Kruger (1825–1904) – the last President of the South African Republic (Transvaal), hero of the Anglo-Boer War and Afrikaner national symbol – whose stern portrait occupies the obverse. The reverse shows the Springbok antelope – South Africa's national animal – designed by sculptor Coert Steynberg.
By 1980, the Krugerrand held over 80% of the global gold coin market with 60 million coins sold. International apartheid sanctions (import bans in the US, UK and EU, 1985–1994) temporarily removed it from Western markets – creating the opening for competitors (Maple Leaf, Vienna Philharmonic, American Eagle) that built today's diverse bullion market. Post-sanctions, the Krugerrand returned to all major markets and rapidly reclaimed its position as the world's most traded gold bullion coin.
Is 22 carat (916.7/1,000) a disadvantage compared to 24-carat coins?
No. The fine gold content of a 1 oz Krugerrand (31.1035 g) is identical to any 1 oz 999.9 coin. The copper alloy makes the Krugerrand significantly more scratch-resistant – its surface holds up better in storage and handling over time. Dealers globally buy Krugerrands at the same fine gold price as 999.9 equivalents.
The Krugerrand has no face value – does that matter?
Correct – the Krugerrand carries no stated face value (unlike the €100 Philharmonic or $50 Eagle). However, it has South African legal tender status and is bought back globally at spot gold plus premium. The absence of a face value has never affected its liquidity.
What are the proof Krugerrand editions in the range?
Proof Krugerrands (Polished Platte / Proof quality) carry limited mintages and often special privy marks. They trade at collector premiums above standard bullion Krugerrands. Check the individual product listings for current availability.
