Buy Swiss Gold Coins – The Vreneli and the Swiss Monetary Tradition
Switzerland produces 3 gold products at CelticGold, led by the famous Vreneli – officially the 20-franc Helvetia gold coin – one of Europe's most recognisable and widely held historical gold coins. Switzerland's gold coin tradition reflects both its role as a neutral financial centre and its membership in the Latin Monetary Union (1865–1927), which standardised its gold coins with French, Belgian and Italian equivalents.
History – The Vreneli and the Latin Monetary Union
In 1865, Switzerland joined France, Belgium and Italy in the Latin Monetary Union – standardising all member nations' gold coins at the same weight (6.4516 g), fineness (900/1,000) and dimensions. The Swiss 20-franc gold coin (5.806 g fine gold) became fully interchangeable with its French, Belgian and Italian counterparts.
The coin's informal name, Vreneli, derives from the female profile on the obverse – a young woman representing Helvetia, the allegorical figure of Switzerland, depicted against an Alpine backdrop with the Matterhorn visible in the distance. The name is the Swiss German diminutive of Verena.
The extraordinary event: in 1935, Switzerland struck over 20 million Vreneli in a single year – all dated 1935 – as a strategic gold reserve measure ahead of World War II. This makes 1935 the commonest Vreneli by far; earlier dates are genuine rarities with significant collector premiums.
Why is the 1935 Vreneli so common?
Over 20 million 1935-dated coins were struck in a single pre-war reserve operation. This date trades near gold spot. Pre-1935 dates, particularly those before 1910, are significantly rarer and command collector premiums.
Is the Vreneli VAT-exempt?
Yes – as historical gold legal tender with 900/1,000 fineness minted after 1900, it qualifies fully as investment gold under the EU VAT Directive.
