With the import ban of Krugerrands in 1986, the United States of America started to issue the American Eagle gold and silver coin series for the first time. The silver coin was minted only in the one ounce size from the beginning.
The appearance has not changed since the first edition. This is one of the reasons the American Silver Eagle has a very high degree of recognition, which is one of the secrets of its success. In 1986, the first year of issue, the coin had a circulation of 5.096 million pieces. Today the American Eagle reaches annual sales in the high double-digit millions.
The 1oz American Eagle 2016 has the same appearance as its predecessors. Also equipped with an edge bar and a rippled edge, the motif of the silver coin is different from the Gold version. The front shows Lady Liberty in a robe with an outstretched arm. The other arm carries oak and laurel branches. She also wears a cloth that shows the stars of the different US states. To the left, below the motive, the rising sun can be seen. The inscription above the coin is "LIBERTY", to the right of the motif reads "IN GOD WE TRUST" and below the year of issue “2016” is inscripted. The back shows a representation of the Great Seal of the United States. The image depicts a bald eagle holding olive branches and arrows in his claws.
The beak holds a banner that reads "E Pluribus Unum" which means "from many one". The label on the back reads:
- UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
- FINE SILVER
- ONE DOLLAR
