2019 is the first issue of the Valiant 1 oz silver coin. The design shows the famous scene of St. George on horseback slaying the Dragon. The story of St. George and the Dragon has been a part of European culture for hundreds of years. The 2019 Valiant 1 oz silver coin contains 99.99% fine silver and is limited to 100,000 copies.
The Valiant 1 oz silver coin has the same safety features as the 10 oz version and is very intricately embossed. The motif is engraved using an "Incuse" minting process, where the image is slightly recessed. The coin background contains a guilloche pattern, which represents a security feature due to the specialized minting process and is considered largely forgery-proof. Another characteristic of the guilloche pattern is the versatile effects that underline the beauty of the coin.
The 2019 Valiant 1 oz silver coin is the "little brother" of the 10 oz Silver Valiant, which was launched with great success in 2018.
Due to the limited mintage and the low surcharge, the 1oz valiant is ideal for both collectors and investors.
The coin has a diameter of 38.61 mm with a thickness of 1.8 mm.
The motif of the Valiant was created by sculptor and designer Etienne Milner. The motif is a rendition of the famous St. George and the Dragon design that was created by Benedetto Pistrucci and first appeared on the Gold Sovereign in 1817.
On the motif side of the coin, Saint George is portrayed on horseback in body armor, with a shield and lance, while killing the dragon. The dragon is shown lying on the ground with its mouth open, while the lance penetrates into his neck. The motif penetrates into the optically offset border area, which makes the motif appear very realistic. The inscription on the top outer edge reads "1oz FINE SILVER 999.9". The year of issue "2019" is shown on the bottom.
The value side of the coin shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait of the Queen was created by Jody Clark, who’s initials appear below the motif. The design shows the Queen looking to the right wearing a crown and large earrings. This is the fifth portrait of Her Majesty depicted on Commonwealth coins. The inscriptions on the outer margin are the name of the regent "ELIZABETH II", the denomination of "2 POUNDS" and the Latin abbreviation "D G REG F D". The coin has a rim and a ribbed edge, which protects the surface from damage.
The Story of the Dragon Slayer
According to legend, in a city called Lybia, which was considered the safest in the kingdom, was surprised by a dragon. The dragon lived for years and centuries in the depths of the lake, which was located in front of the city walls. When the dragon awoke, he frightened the population. To appease the dragon, the ruler of the city decided to supply the dragon with all the food that was available. When the dragon was not satisfied with what it had been given, the city lord decided to sacrifice the inhabitants of the city to the dragon. One day the lot decided that the king's daughter should be thrown to the dragon for food. The king had to bow to the law. The daughter of the king fled and on the run she met the young knight George. He was so fearless that he took up the fight with the dragon and killed him. When the king's daughter thanked him and asked him how he had the courage to fight the dragon, George replied that faith in God defeats all evil.
This is how the legend of the dragon slayer came about at a time when Christianity was to be driven out.
