Size, Weight & Alloy

Britannia-Silver-Coin-1ozThe Britannia 1oz 2016 has a fineness of 999/1000 and a fine weight of 31,103 g. The coins is made of pure silver. However, from 1997 to 2012 the Britannia 1oz silver was produced with a fineness of 958/1000. The alloy was copper and silver. The diameter is 38.61 mm, with a nominal value of 2 pounds.

Because of the edge bar,  the 2016 Silver Britannia has good stability. The rippled edge protects the coin from counterfeiting. Changes to the coin by cutting off silver would show immediately as these fine elements cannot be tampered without raising suspicion. In addition, both sides of the Britannia 1oz 2016 have ornamental circles with half rectangles connected by a bar with the edge bar.

Britannia Silber Coin 1oz 2016The obverse of the silver coin shows the Allegory of Britannia. She wears a fluttering robe and a Corinthian Helmet on her head. She is armed with a trident almost reaching to the edge rod. The goddess stands on the ground with a shield. The Britannia holds an olive branch in her hand, which stands for freedom. The label on the front depicts the name of the coin, the year 2016, the fineness of 999, the fine weight of 1oz and the words "Fine Silver".

Britannia-Silver-1oz-2016The back depicts an image of Queen Elizabeth II with the British Crown, but without a diadem as it is often the case with other commonwealth coins. The labeling of the reverse reads "Elizabeth II D G", "Reg Fid Def" and shows the nominal value of the silver coin which is 2 Pounds.

History of Britannia Silver Coin

Britannia silver coins have been minted by the British Royal Mint since 1997. The coin was introduced to satisfy the growing demand for silver bullion coins in the United Kingdom and the world.

From 1997 to 2012 the Silver Britannia had a fineness of 958/1000 which was increased to 999/1000 in 2013. This step was necessary because almost all silver bullion coins have a very high purity of up to 999.9 / 1000. Investors as well as mints prefer a higher fineness. On the other hand the fineness of 958/1000 is more scratch resistant due to the copper content; which is an advantage of a harder alloy.

Britannia Silver Coins and Fractional Sizes

The Britannia silver coins are also available in fractional sizes. What’s unusual is that the weights reflect the gold coin fractional sizes and are not larger but smaller. The Britannia 5 oz is an exception. The Britannia silver coins sizes are as follows: 5 oz, 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz.

Manufacturer: Royal Mint

The Royal Mint was founded in 886 and is one of the oldest mints in the world. The mint was based in London and for a long time was located in the Tower of London. In 1976, the Royal Mint and their manufacturing plant was moved to Llantrisant, which lies a few kilometers away from Cardiff. The most famous director of the Royal Mint was Sir Isaac Newton. In addition to the Britannia 1oz 2016, the Royal Mint also mints the famous Gold Sovereign.

Tips: Britannia Silver Coins

Britannia Silver 1ozBuyers of Britannia 1oz silver coins should familiarize themselves with factors that influence the silver price. These factors include supply and demand and current price trends. Buying Britannias at a low silver price adds to the overall investment success. Most investors look at silver investments as a way to preserve capital over the long term.

Silver investors can also take advantage of volume discounts when buying larger quantities of Britannia:

Another tip we would like to share is how to treat silver coins. Pure silver coins, like the Britannia 1oz 2016, should be left in the original packaging, since the scratch resistance is relatively low. This is due to the silver itself, because it is a very soft precious metal.
