In 2019 the Austrian Mint celebrates its 825 year anniversary. The founding of the Vienna Mint is an interesting story. In the year 1194 King Richard I Lionheart, who had been imprisoned for two years at the behest of Duke Leopold V at Burgruine Durnstein Castle, is released for a high ransom.

Leopold V used the ransom money to mint silver coins, which marked the beginning of producing coins in Vienna.

The Leopold V. silver coin celebrates 825 years of minting history in Vienna and is the first edition of a three-part series. This edition is limited to only 100,000 pieces and will be sought after by both collectors and investors.

As with all modern semi-numismatics the premium of the editions may rise quickly.

The motif side of the coin features the profile of Leopold V. He is depicted wearing his battle armor with a sword in his hand. In the upper left, on the outer edge, is the engraving “1194”, which is the founding of the Austrian Mint.

The value side shows a crusader on horseback carrying a flag and shield. The country of origin is engraved on the top outer edge as “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH”. On the bottom portion of the coin is the face value of “1,50 EURO”, the date of issue “2019” and the fine weight and precious metal “1 UNZE FEINSILBER”.
