Appearance
Equipped with an edge bar, riffel edge and a beautiful motif, the Koala looks very appealing. The edge bar provides better stability and stackability. The ribbed edge provides, among other things, protection against manipulation and counterfeit.
The koala is predominately pictured on the front of the coin. The 2018 issue features a left-facing adult koala sitting on a flowering eucalyptus branch. Imprinted to the left of the koala is the letter "P", standing for Perth Mint. In the branch on the bottom left you can see the letters "NM", which stands for Natasha Muhl, the designer of the motif.
Stamped above the motif around the outer edge is the name of the coin series "AUSTRALIAN KOALA". The lower margin shows the year of publication "2018", the fine weight "1oz", the fineness "9999" and the precious metal "SILVER".
The value side shows the profile of Queen Elizabeth II within an inner circle, designed by Ian Rank Broadley. In the margin of the lapel is the name of the regent "ELIZABETH II", the country of manufacture "Australia" and the denomination "1 DOLLAR".
Story
Together with the kangaroo, the koala is one of the best known representatives of the Australian fauna and is one of the most popular symbols of Australia. The name "Koala" comes from one of the countless Aboriginal languages and means "no water" or "not drinking".
The koala ingests the liquid needed for survival exclusively through the eucalyptus leaves, from which it consumes up to 400 grams per day. Due to its worldwide popularity, the Perth Mint dedicated a coin series to this national animal. The first edition of the Australian Koala was released in 2007.
Each year the design of the coin changes, but will always feature a different representation of the koala bear. Since every years design is unique and distinct, the coin is popular with collectors and investors from all over the world.
Manufacturer
The publisher of the Australian Koala is the Perth Mint, based in Perth / Australia. It is one of the world's oldest and most respected mints. The mint opened in 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint London. It has its own goldsmiths and refineries and produces many well-known and sought-after gold, silver and platinum coins and bars. Until 1 July 1970, the Perth Mint was under British law, and currently it is wholly owned by the government of Western Australia.
