The appearance of the Lunar II dog silver coin show the typical edge bar and rippled edge. The edge bar protects the motif which results in improved stackability. The rippled edge serves as counterfeit protection, because weight changes (by filing or similar) can be recognized directly with the naked eye.

The motif on the front shows a German shepherd with a puppy lying in the grass. The view of both dogs is attentive and to the right. Left of the dogs are Chinese peonies. The puppy is below the adult dog, and pictured in the background are grass and stones.

On the right, above the left front paw of the large dog, is the Mintmark "P", which stands for the Perth Mint. The Chinese character for "dog" is located at the center. Smooth uneven lines are imprinted around the outer edge, but only on the motif side of the coin. The motif was designed by the artist Ing Ing Jong.

As with all Commonwealth gold and silver coins, the current regent of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II, is shown in profile with diadem and earring. The initials "IRB" are embossed under the motif, which are the initials of the Queen motif artist Ian Rank Broadley.

The following inscription can be seen on the back:
