The American Eagle 1 oz gold coin for 2018 has arrived. Produced by the US Mint, the American Eagle gold coin is one of the most popular gold coins in the world. Introduced in 1986, the American Eagle gold coin has a fine gold content of 91.67%. It is a recognized gold bullion coin and therefore exempt from VAT in Germany.

Weight and Alloy

The American Eagle Gold Coin is issued in the four standard weights of 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz. The American Eagle is a 22-karat gold coin, with a fineness of 916.67 / 1000 gold. The fine weight is 31.103 g, which corresponds to one ounce of fine gold.

The alloying components are 91.67% gold, 3% silver and 5.33% copper. The shiny appearance of the coin is due to the unique alloy the American Eagle. This alloy distinguishes the American Eagle from the Krugerrand, which contains only copper as an alloying constituent.

There are two minor disadvantage of the American Eagle. The first is the use of silver in the alloy. Silver is very soft and therefore more susceptible to scratches and damage, unlike other 22-karat gold coins, which only use copper. The second drawback is that the premium for the American Eagle 1 oz gold coin is increased by the use of silver.

Appearance

The American Gold Eagle is beautifully designed and carries the typical symbols of the United States. These include the "Lady Liberty", an olive branch and the eagle. Despite the 5.33 percent copper content, it does not have the typical golden reddish color of a 22-karat  gold coin.

The edge bar is reeded and slightly raised. Both elements are for safety and aesthetics. The edge bar improves the stackability and together with the reeded edge, provide added security against manipulation and counterfeit.

Motif side

The motif side shows the standing Lady Liberty. She was worshiped in Roman culture as a goddess of freedom. In her right hand she holds a torch, which she points forward. In the left an olive branch, which is also a symbol of freedom. She is shown standing in a robe, with sandals and flowing hair. Below Lady Liberty you can see several oak leaves, which stand for the military strength of the United States. In the lower left part of the coin is a depiction of the Washington Capitol. In the background, the "Lady Liberty" is surrounded by tapering lines that represent the rising sun. A 50-star ornamental circle decorates the coins outer edge. Above the motif the word "LIBERTY" is embossed. The year of issue “2018” can be seen on the right side of the coin.

Value side

The motif of the value side shows three eagles. The male eagle is seen in flight over the nest and in his claws he carries an olive branch. In the nest sits a female eagle, with her eaglet. The female protectively holds the young eaglet in her wing. To the left of the motif are the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM" which means "out of many, one" and on the right is the engraving "IN GOD WE TRUST". Above the motif the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" can be seen. Inscripted around the lower outer edge is the fine weight "1 OZ FINE GOLD" and the face value "50 DOLLARS".

Story

The American Gold Eagle was first introduced in 1986. Gold Eagles minted between 1986 to 1991 were dated with Roman numerals. Starting in 1992 the US Mint began dating Gold Eagles in Arabic numbers.

The American Eagle is available in four weights which include 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz. The design of the American Eagle was modeled after the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin that was commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt to produce coins that were similar to ancient Roman and Greek coins.

The American Eagle is produced by the US Mint, which is the official mint of the United States and part of the Department of the Treasury. In addition to minting gold, silver and platinum bullion coins the US Mint is responsible for producing circulation coins for the United States.

The US Mint has four mints:
