Authorized by the Gold Bullion Act of 1985, the American Eagle has been minted every year since 1986. The beautiful and famous design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens “Lady Liberty” on the front of the coin celebrates a part of American history.

The image of “Lady Liberty” first appeared on the $20 gold coin that was minted between 1907 and 1933. The American Eagle is fully backed by the US mint for its purity and weight.

Denomination, Weight, Size and Alloy

The 2017 Gold American Eagle series is available in 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz. The 22 karat coin has a fine content of 91.67% gold, 3% silver and 5.33% copper. This unique alloy gives the American Eagle excellent durability, and a brilliant shiny appearance.

Investment coins with a gold copper alloy are common as it gives the coin better scratch resistance and reduces wear and tear. The silver content in the American Eagle adds to the beauty and the bright shiny appearance.

Story

The American Eagle was first introduced in 1986 and is available in 4 different sizes which include 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz. By law the gold content in the American Eagle must come from mines in America.

Gold Eagles that were minted between 1986-1991 are dated with roman numerals. In 1992 the mint began using arabic numbers for dating Eagles. The biggest production year for the 1 oz Gold American Eagle was in 1999 when 1,505,026 coins were minted.

Appearance

The American Gold Eagle is a very beautiful gold coin. In spite of 5.33 percent copper content, she does not possess the typical golden reddish color of a 22 K gold coin. This is mainly due to the 3% silver content which adds a bright gold color to the finish of the coin. The edge rod improves the stackability and together with the rippled edge, provide a security feature that makes it difficult to tamper with the coin.

Front

The front predominately features a full length image of Lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and olive branch in her left hand. In the background is the Capitol building. A 50 star ornamental circle surrounds the outer edge of the coin. The year “2017” is embossed on the right side toward the bottom.

The design was taken from the $20 gold coin, which was commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt to produce coins like the ancient Greek and Roman coins. The original design of Lady Liberty came from sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

Reverse

The design on the back depicts a male eagle flying towards his nest carrying an olive branch. Also displayed are a female Eagle with her hatchlings. The design was created by sculptor Miley Busiek.

Around the top outer edge of the coin the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are imprinted. Along the bottom outer edge the weight “1OZ FINE GOLD” and the nominal value “50 DOLLARS” are embossed.

US Mint

The American Eagle is produced by the US Mint. The US Mint was formed on April 2, 1792 with the passage of the Coinage Act by congress. The mint was the first federal building erected under the constitution and was based in Philadelphia.

The mint operates six facilities across the US that include:

  • Washington DC

  • Philadelphia, PA

  • West Point, NY

  • Denver, CO

  • Fort Knox, KY

  • San Francisco, CA

The American Eagle coins are available in Gold and Silver. American Eagle bullion coins are the most popular bullion coin brand in the US.

Benefits of Gold American Eagle

  • The American Eagle is one of the top brand name coins in the world and as a result  are easy to buy and sell anywhere precious metals are sold.

  • The 22k gold-silver-copper alloy makes the coin highly durable and unique.

  • The American Eagle series comes in a variety of different sizes.

  • The coin has a beautiful design and shiny appearance.

  • The American Eagle is suitable for both investors and collectors.

The only real downside to the Gold American Eagle is the higher premium compared to other name brand coins. The higher premium is mostly due to the 3% silver content. In the minting process silver is more expensive than copper.

The Price of the American Gold Eagle

The gold price fluctuates minute by minute on the various trading exchanges around the world. The price listed on the exchanges is the going rate for 1 troy ounce of gold. This is also referred to as the gold “spot price”.

The factors that influence the spot price of gold can be wide ranging. These factors include supply and demand, geopolitical events, central bank policy and investor confidence.

Premium

When buying gold coins investors and collectors need to understand the premium. The premium is an additional fee that is charged for a bullion coin that is above and beyond the gold spot price.

Generally speaking, the premium covers the costs and margin of both the mint and the bullion dealer. The factors that will influence the premium include:

  • The type of bullion product being sold

  • The volume of coins that being purchased

  • The supply and demand of bullion products

  • The size of the coin or bar being purchased

As mentioned above, Gold Eagle’s carry a higher premium because of the 3% silver content in the coin. Also, fractional sized Gold Eagles will carry higher premium than 1 oz Eagle’s because smaller coins are more expensive to mint.

Sometimes bullion dealers will offer a discounted premium when buying a large volume of coins. Also, bullion dealers have different costs structures, so premiums can vary greatly depending on the dealer you choose. However, always select a reputable precious metals dealer who has a wide selection of bullion products and a proven track record.

What makes the American Eagle gold bullion coin good for investors is that the coin offers a high value for the money. The purchase of gold coins is ideal for value investors as long as the coin carries the status of a gold bullion coin, and is therefore exempt from VAT. The American Gold Eagle is one of them, since it meets all the criteria, which are anchored in the German section §25c UStG.

The criteria is for VAT exemption is as follows:

  • The gold coin must have been minted after 1800.

  • The gold coin is legal tender in the country of manufacture or has been.

  • The gold coins must have a fine gold content of at least 900/1000.

  • The gold coin may not exceed the open market value by more than 80%.
