One Dollar Liberty Head gold coins were minted from 1849-1889 and produced with three different design types that were very similar to each other. This is the smallest denomination ever produced by the US Mint. The One Dollar Liberty Head gold coin was minted because of the large gold deposits found during the California Gold Rush.

All three designs of the 1 Dollar Liberty Head gold coin have a purity of 90% gold and weight of .04837 ounces.

Design

The designs of the 1 Dollar Liberty Head Gold coin were created by James B. Longacre. There were just under 20 million of these coins minted in total. The type II design is considered the rarest because it was only minted for two years.

Type I (1849-1854)

The type I front side depicts the head of Lady Liberty surrounded by 13 stars, which signify the original 13 colonies. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on her hair band. The reverse side shows an ornamental wreath. The inscriptions around the outer edge read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”. The nominal value and year of issue are embossed in the center.

Type II (1854-1855)

The type II design depicts Lady Liberty as an Indian Princess. The lettering around the outer edge reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”. The reverse side shows an ornamental wreath with the nominal value and date of issue in the center. These coins have a diameter of 15 mm and are slightly larger than the first type.

Type III (1856-1889)

The third type also depicts the “Indian Head” lady liberty design with crown. The engravings around the outer edge read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”. The reverse shows the wreath with the nominal value of “1 DOLLAR” and the date of issue embossed in the center. The third type is also slightly larger than the first type with a diameter of 15 mm.
