The $20 Double Eagle Liberty Head gold coin was minted from 1849 to 1907. The Coinage Act of 1792 authorized the largest denomination gold piece to be ten dollars.
However, the vast gold deposits discovered during the California Gold Rush in the 1840’s resulted in Congress approving the larger denominated $20 Double Eagle Gold piece.
Design
The $20 Dollar Double Eagle was minted with three slightly different design types. All three designs were created by James B. Longacre.
Type I (1849-1866)
The front side, which is the same on all design types, depicts Lady Liberty with the word “LIBERTY” inscripted on her Coronet. There are 13 stars surrounding the outer edge. The date of issue is below Lady Liberty.
The reverse side shows a heraldic eagle holding a double ribbon, with the inscription “E Pluribus Unum”. Above the eagle are 13 stars arranged as a halo. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is embossed around the top outer edge. The nominal value is engraved as “Twenty D” on the bottom.
Type II (1866-1876)
The main difference with the type II design is the addition of the motto “In God We Trust” inscripted inside the halo of 13 stars.
Type III (1877-1907)
The only change in the type III design is the nominal value of “Twenty Dollars” is spelled out. The type I and type II designs show “Twenty D” as the nominal value.
