The ¼ oz Gold Krugerrand was introduced in 1980. Fractional gold coins, like the ¼ oz Krugerrand, are an excellent way for first time gold investors to gain exposure to gold. Fractional gold coins are also good for investors who want to regularly add to an existing gold coin portfolio. The Gold Krugerrand has been one of the most successful investment coins in the world and has been around for decades. Between 1974 and 1985 it is estimated that 22 million gold Krugerrands were imported to the United States alone.

Design

The obverse of the Gold Krugerrand depicts an image of Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic. The reverse side of the coin predominantly displays a springbok antelope running in a remote nature setting. The reverse side of the coin was created and designed by artist Coert Steynberg. In addition to the image of the springbok antelope, the year of issue and the fine gold content are embossed.

Gold Alloy in the Krugerrand

The Krugerrand is a 22k gold coin with a combination of 91.66% gold and 8.34% copper. This alloy has often been referred to as “crown gold” because it was modeled after the English coins like the Gold Sovereign. Historically, English coins used a gold/copper alloy because they were “circulation coins” that changed hands often. The gold/copper alloy produces a more durable coin that has good scratch resistance. In the early 1980’s, the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf challenged the dominance of the Krugerrand by introducing one of the first 24k gold bullion coins that offered investors a pure gold coin.
