The iconic design of St.George Slaying the dragon first appeared on the Gold Sovereign in 1817. St. George was a Roman soldier, who became one of Europe’s greatest legends, symbolizing courage and strength. St. George was made the patron Saint of England by King Edward III in 1348.

The Sovereign is produced by the Royal Mint which is based in Llantrisant, North Wales. The Royal Mint has more than 1,000 years of history and heritage. During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s the Royal Mint produced the Sovereign at its branches in Australia, South Africa, India and Canada.
