The history of the Sovereign gold coins reaches back to the year 1489 but the more modern sovereign gold coins were minted in 1817 after the monetary reform where the Sovereign replaced the Guinea.
All Sovereigns are minted by the Royal Mint and have 916.66/1000 purity or 22 karat. The Sovereign is available as a Full Sovereign with 7.968 grams weight or Half Sovereign with 3.994 grams weight.
