The Lunar II gold coin series from the Perth Mint features the animals in the 12 year Chinese Lunar Calendar. The series began in 2008 with the “Year of the Mouse” and ends in 2019 with the “Year of the Pig”.

2012 is the “Year of the Dragon”. The Dragon is the fifth sign in the Chinese Zodiac and those born under its rule are said to be charismatic, determined and ambitious. The birth years of the Lunar Dragon are 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1978, 1988, 2000 and 2012.

Chinese Lunar Calendar

The ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar dates back to 2,600 BC. The calendar is based upon the appearance of the new moon and it associates a different animal with each year in the 12 year cycle.

In Chinese culture each animal is believed to influence the people born under its rule. The 12 animals in order are the Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Money, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
