The Australian Nugget coin series was first released in 1986, after Australia decided to produce their own gold coin after the import ban of Krugerrands. The Kangaroo design was included on the Gold Nugget in 1989 making is more appealing to investors and collectors. The original Nugget series was renamed ‘Australian Kangaroo’ in 2008.
The yearly changing images on the coins make them highly popular, and sought after.
All coins are packaged individually in a durable acrylic case to protect it from rough handling. To underpin the supplementary collectability of Australian gold bullion coins, a maximum mintage is declared for nominated sizes at the beginning of each year. The 2003 coin has a mintage of 46,554 coins.
Design/Appearance
This 1 oz coin features a kangaroo drinking from a stream in the outback. Inscribed around the edge of the coin is ‘The Australian Nugget’ Along with the year, and denomination, and purity.
The obverse features a right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Raphael Maklouf.
