Coins published up until 1989, featured images of the famous gold nuggets found on the continent during the 1800’s till 1980. However in 1989, the image was changed to that of the the kangaroo which received official national recognition with its inclusion on the Australian "Coat of Arms" in 1908. It is said that this animal was chosen to move the country "forward" because the kangaroo can not go backwards.
However, coins have also featured the closely related Wallaroos and Wallabies. The change over to using an image of an animal made the coin more marketable, and appealing to investors and collectors.
Design/Appearance
The 1997 1oz coin features the image of a Kangaroo hopping to the right.
The weight, purity, year, and ‘The Australian Nugget’ is inscribed around the edge.
The obverse of the coin features a right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which was designed by sculptor Raphael Maklouf.
