The 1989 coin is the last to feature the iconic ‘Welcome Stranger’ Nugget found in 1896. Coins struck from 1990 have the design of the Kangaroo, making it instantly recognisable as product of Australia. They also have a unique two-tone frosted design, which is unusual for standard bullion coins.
Design/Appearance
Each coin made from 1986-1989, depending on the denomination, features a different famous nugget. The name of the nugget is written on the reverse of the coin, under the image.
The 1989 1oz coin features the image of the gold nugget, “Welcome Stranger” found on the 5th February 1869. The name is inscribed under the design.
The obverse of the coin features a right facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which was designed by sculptor Raphael Maklouf.
