The Perth Mint first introduced the Lunar I Gold coin series in 1996. The series was issued for 12 years, with each year representing an animal from the Chinese Zodiac. The 1996 “Lunar Mouse” was the inaugural edition and the series ended in 2007 with the “Lunar Pig”.
The 2006 Lunar Dog 1 oz gold coin has a fineness of .9999 gold and a limited mintage of just 26,334 coins.

Design
The “Year of the Dog” is celebrated with an image of a dog standing on a grass field in an attentive position. The Chinese character for “Dog” is engraved on the right side of the coin near the edge. The year of issue “1996” is shown vertically, to the left of the motif. The fine weight and purity of “1 OZ 9999 GOLD” is inscripted below the image of the dog.
The reverse side shows a right side profile of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II with crown. The portrait of the Queen was created by artist Ian Rank-Broadley. The inscriptions around the outer edge are the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, the country of origin “AUSTRALIA” and the nominal value of “100 DOLLARS”.
